In the seventh year of Zhenguan he served as commander of the Gongzhou circuit campaign, crushed the rebellious Lao tribes, and returned. Emperor Taizong heard that he had charged ahead through flying arrows and stones and comforted him, saying, "I have heard that those who repay the state with loyalty do not spare their own lives—and in you I see it."
