詔王、相國擇可立為淮南王者，群臣請立子長為王。 He commanded the kings and chancellors to select someone who could be established as King of Huainan. The ministers requested that his son Chang be established as king.

方今高帝子獨淮南王與大王，大王又長，賢聖仁孝，聞於天下，故大臣因天下之心而欲迎立大王，大王勿疑也。」 Of Emperor Gaozu's surviving sons, only the King of Huainan and Your Majesty remain. You are the elder brother, renowned throughout the empire for your virtue, wisdom, benevolence, and filial piety. The ministers, following the will of the people, wish to welcome you as emperor. Do not doubt this.'

淮南王，弟也：皆秉德以陪朕，豈為不豫哉！ The King of Huainan is like a younger brother to me. All of them uphold virtue to support me—how could they not stand ready as successors!

封淮南王舅趙兼為周陽侯，齊王舅駟鈞為靖郭侯，故常山丞相蔡兼為樊侯。 He enfeoffed Zhao Jian, uncle of the King of Huainan, as Marquis of Zhouyang; Si Jun, uncle of the King of Qi, as Marquis of Jingguo; and Cai Jian, former chancellor of Changshan, as Marquis of Fan.

淮南王長殺辟陽侯審食其。 King Chang of Huainan assassinated Marquis Piyang Shen Shiqi.

十一月，淮南王長謀反，廢遷蜀嚴道，死雍。 In the eleventh month, King Chang of Huainan plotted rebellion. He was deposed from his throne and exiled to Yandao in Shu, where he died in Yong.

八年夏，封淮南厲王長子四人為列侯。 In summer of the eighth year, he enfeoffed four sons of King Li Chang of Huainan as marquises.

五月，立齊悼惠王子六人、淮南厲王子三人皆為王。 In the fifth month, he enfeoffed six sons of King Daohui of Qi and three sons of King Li of Huainan, making them all kings.

高皇帝八男：呂后生孝惠帝，曹夫人生齊悼惠王肥，薄姬生孝文帝，戚夫人生趙隱王如意，趙姬生淮南厲王長，諸姬生趙幽王友、趙共王恢、燕靈王建。 Emperor Gao fathered eight sons: Empress Lü gave him Emperor Xiaohui; Lady Cao gave him Prince Daohui of Qi, Liu Fei; Consort Bo bore the future Emperor Wen; Lady Qi bore Liu Ruyi, later titled the Hidden Prince of Zhao; Lady Zhao bore Liu Chang, the Fierce Prince of Huainan; and lesser consorts bore Liu You, Liu Hui, and Liu Jian, the Obscure Prince of Zhao, the Joint Prince of Zhao, and the Numinous Prince of Yan respectively.

黥布反，漢立皇子長為淮南王，而蒼相之。 When Qing Bu rebelled, the Han enthroned the imperial prince Liu Chang as king of Huainan, with Zhang Cang as his chancellor.

淮南厲王朝，殺辟陽侯，居處驕甚。 Prince Li of Huainan came to the capital, slew Marquis of Piyang, and carried himself with outrageous arrogance.

淮南王益橫。 The king of Huainan only grew bolder.

謀反發覺，上征淮南王，遷之蜀，檻車傳送。 When his treason came to light, the emperor recalled him, reassigned him to the Shu frontier, and shipped him west in a prison wagon.

淮南王為人剛，有如遇霜露行道死，陛下竟為以天下大弗能容，有殺弟名，奈何？」 He is a proud man; if he should sicken and die on the march, the empire will say you could not abide your own brother and you will wear the stain of fratricide—how will you answer that?"

淮南王至雍，病死。 By the time he reached Yong he was dead—officially, of illness.

且陛下遷淮南王，欲以苦其志，使改過，有司宿衛不謹，故病死。」 You sent him away to humble his spirit and teach him amendment; the guards were negligent and he died—that is the truth of it, not your hand."

乃立皇子長為淮南王。 He then installed the imperial prince Chang as the new King of Huainan.

立皇子長為淮南王，封賁赫為期思侯，諸將率多以功封者。 The imperial prince Chang was installed as the King of Huainan, and Ben He was enfeoffed as the Marquis of Qisi. Most of the generals who had served in the campaign likewise received fiefs for their contributions.
