When he defied the court he wrote the governors of Qin, Jing, Yong, Liang, and Bin: "Wicked ministers have thrown the government into chaos. As the late emperor lay dying they plotted against the Prince of Qin, installed a puppet heir, and seized power for themselves, wounding the imperial family and unsettling the frontiers.

初見秦王權重，及挾王淑妃勢，傾心事之； At first, seeing the Prince of Qin's great power and the backing of Consort Wang Shufei, he devoted himself wholeheartedly to serving him;

秦王領兵至天津橋，時漢瓊與朱、馮及康義誠方會議於內庭，謀猶未決，漢瓊獨出死力，先入殿門，奏於明宗，語在《秦王傳》。 When the Prince of Qin led troops to the Tianjin Bridge, Hanqiong was meeting with Zhu, Feng, and Kang Yicheng in the inner court; the plot was still undecided. Hanqiong alone exerted himself to the utmost, entered the palace gate first, and reported to Mingzong — the account is in the 《Biography of the Prince of Qin》.

秦王入視明宗疾已革，既出而聞哭聲，以謂帝崩矣，乃謀以兵入宮者，懼不得立也。 The Prince of Qin visited the dying emperor; leaving, he heard lamentation, thought his father dead, and plotted to storm the palace lest he lose the throne.

大臣朱弘昭等方圖其事，議未決，漢瓊遽入見明宗，言秦王反，即以兵誅之，陷秦王大惡，而明宗以此飲恨而終。 Ministers Zhu Hongzhao and others still debated; Hanqiong rushed to the sickbed, cried treason, and had the Prince of Qin killed—loading him with guilt so that Mingzong died in bitterness.
