世之有飢穰，天之行也，禹、湯被之矣。 Famine and abundance are Heaven's recurrent course; Yu and Tang experienced them too.

夏書：禹堙洪水十三年，過家不入門。 The Book of Xia says that Yu spent thirteen years controlling the great flood, even passing his own home without going inside.

唯是為務，故道河自積石，歷龍門，南到華陰，東下底柱，及盟津、雒內，至于大伾。 So Yu focused on this above all: he redirected the Yellow River from Jishi through Longmen, south to Huayin, east past Dizhu, through Mengjin and the Luo region, and on to Dapi.

於是禹以為河所從來者高，水湍悍，難以行平地，數為敗，乃釃二渠以引其河，北載之高地，過洚水，至於大陸，播為九河，同為迎河，入于勃海。 Yu recognized that the river descended from great height with ferocious current, impossible to tame on open plain and repeatedly breaching control. He therefore cut two diversion channels, led the flow north over higher terrain, past the Hong waters to the Dalu plain, where it dispersed into the Nine Rivers, rejoined as the Ying River system, and emptied into the Bohai.

而道河北行二渠，復禹舊跡，而梁、楚之地復寧，無水災。 Two channels were also opened on the north side, restoring Yu's ancient alignment. Liang and Chu regained stability, free again from major floods.

然河乃大禹之所道也，聖人作事，為萬世功，通於神明，恐難改更。」 But this river course was established by Yu himself. The works of sages serve ages and accord with the numinous order; changing them is no light matter."

禹非不愛民力，以地形有勢，故穿九河，今既滅難明，屯氏河不流行七十餘年，新絕未久，其處易浚。 Yu did not ignore labor burdens; he worked with topographic force, which is why he opened nine distributaries. Their traces are now obscure. Tunshi has been inactive for over seventy years, but because the closure is recent, the channel can still be dredged.

昔大禹治水，山陵當路者毀之，故鑿龍門，辟伊闕，析底柱，破碣石，墮斷天地之性。 But when Yu governed the flood, he cut through mountains that blocked the course: he opened Longmen, cleft Yique, split Dizhu, and broke Jieshi - reshaping even the natural frame of heaven and earth.

聞禹治河時，本空此地，以為水猥，盛則放溢，少稍自索，雖時易處，猶不能離此。 He said Yu had intentionally left this area open as flood-retention space: high water could spread there and later recede naturally. Though channels shifted, they remained within this zone.

禹之行河水，本隨西山下東北去。 Yu's original river line ran northeast beneath the western mountain front.

周譜云定王五年河徙，則今所行非禹之所穿也。 Zhou records say the river migrated in King Ding's fifth year, so the current line is no longer Yu's original channel.

衣食縣官，而為之作，乃兩便，可以上繼禹功，下除民疾。」 If the state feeds and clothes them while employing them in works, both sides benefit - continuing Yu's legacy above and relieving popular hardship below."

贊曰：古人有言：「微禹之功，吾其魚乎！」 The appraisal concludes with the old saying: "Without Yu's achievement, would we all not have become fish?"

Within the four extremities, wherever boats and carts could reach and wherever human footprints went, all heard his command, so that they might aid him where he fell short;

是以大禹能亡失德，夏以長□。 and so Yu never slipped from the Way, and the house of Xia endured—though the tablet here is damaged.

平陽侯臣窋、汝陰侯臣灶、潁陰侯臣何、廷尉臣宜昌、隴西太守臣昆邪所選賢良太子家令臣錯昧死再拜言：臣竊聞古之賢主莫不求賢以為輔翼，故黃帝得力牧而為五帝先，大禹得咎繇而為三王祖，齊桓得管子而為五伯長。 The men who recommended me as Worthy and Good were your servants the Marquis of Pingyang, Cao Zhu; the Marquis of Ruyin, Xiahou Zao; the Marquis of Yingyin, Guan He; the Commandant of Justice, Yichang; and the Administrator of Longxi, Kunxie. Your servant Chao Cuo bows twice and, risking death, states: I have heard that every worthy ruler of antiquity sought worthy men as his wings and helpers. Thus the Yellow Emperor obtained Limu and became foremost of the Five Thearchs; Great Yu obtained Gao Yao and became progenitor of the Three Kings; and Duke Huan of Qi obtained Guan Zhong and became leader of the Five Hegemons.

今陛下講於大禹及高皇帝之建豪英也，退托於不明，以求賢良，讓之至也。 You rehearse the deeds of Yu and Gaozu, then call yourself dim while summoning talent—that is humility carried almost too far.

臣聞堯受命，以天下為憂，而未以位為樂也，故誅逐亂臣，務求賢聖，是以得舜、禹、稷、□、咎繇。 I have heard that Yao, once charged with the realm, worried for the world rather than rejoiced in the throne—so he purged corrupt ministers and sought sages, gaining Shun, Yu, Lord Millet, Xie, and Gaoyao.

舜知不可辟，乃即天子之位，以禹為相，因堯之輔佐，繼其統業，是以垂拱無為而天下治。 Shun saw he could not refuse, mounted the throne, made Yu his minister, kept Yao’s counselors, and carried on the work—so he could fold his hands while the empire ran itself.

道之大原出於天，天不變，道亦不變，是以禹繼舜，舜繼堯，三聖相受而守一道，亡救弊之政也，故不言其所損益也。 The Way springs from Heaven; Heaven is changeless, so the Way is changeless—Yao, Shun, and Yu handed on one thread with no “repair” edicts, hence silence on additions or cuts.

於是禹乃興九招之樂，致異物，鳳皇來翔。 Yu then performed the Nine Summons; prodigies appeared and phoenixes wheeled overhead.

舜子商均亦不肖，舜乃豫薦禹於天。 His son Shangjun proved unworthy, so Shun long before had commended Yu to heaven.

三年喪畢，禹亦乃讓舜子，如舜讓堯子。 After mourning Yu yielded to Shun’s son as Shun had once yielded to Yao’s son.

諸侯歸之，然後禹踐天子位。 The lords rallied to Yu, and he then took the throne.

以客見天子，天子弗臣，示不敢專也。 The reigning king received them as guests, not vassals, to show the throne was never a private possession.

自黃帝至舜、禹，皆同姓而異其國號，以章明德。 From Huangdi through Shun and Yu the line shared one surname yet changed dynastic titles to mark their shining virtue.

帝禹為夏后而別氏，姓姒氏。 Emperor Yu founded Xia and took the clan name Si.

皆曰：「伯禹為司空，可成美堯之功。」 They said, "Lord Yu, as Minister of Works, could finish what Yao began."

命禹：「女平水土，維是勉之。」 He ordered Yu: "You shall bring the land and waters to order; give it your whole strength."

禹拜稽首，讓於契、后稷、皋陶。 Yu kowtowed and declined in favor of Xie, Hou Ji, and Gao Yao.

禹為人敏給克勤； Yu was quick-witted, responsive, and tirelessly industrious.

禹乃遂與益、后稷奉帝命，命諸侯百姓興人徒以傅土，行山表木，定高山大川。 Yu, with Yi and Hou Ji, carried out the Son of Heaven's orders, mobilized nobles and commoners to shift soil, blazed trails along ridges and marked timbers, and charted every major height and watercourse.

禹傷先人父鯀功之不成受誅，乃勞身焦思，居外十三年，過家門不敢入。 He mourned that Gun had died unfinished yet under sentence of death, so he drove himself until body and mind were spent, spent thirteen years away from home, and even passed his own door without stopping.

禹乃行相地宜所有以貢，及山川之便利。 He then assessed what each region could yield in tribute and how mountains and rivers could serve transport.

禹行自冀州始。 Yu began his survey in Jizhou.

貢維土五色，羽畎夏狄，嶧陽孤桐，泗濱浮磬，淮夷蠙珠臮魚，其篚玄纖縞。 It sent five-colored clays, pheasant tails from the Yu valley, lone paulownia from Yiyang, floating lithophones from the Si, pearls and fish from the Huai tribes, and baskets of fine dark silk.

於是帝錫禹玄圭，以告成功于天下。 The Emperor gave Yu a black scepter to proclaim the work finished to the realm.

帝舜朝，禹、伯夷、皋陶相與語帝前。 At Shun's audience Yu, Boyi, and Gao Yao debated policy before the throne.

禹曰：「然，如何？」 Yu asked, "Agreed—but how do we put that into practice?"

禹拜美言，曰：「然。」 Yu bowed and said, "Well spoken—it is so."

禹曰：「吁！ Yu cried, "Oh—

禹曰：「女言致可績行。」 Yu said, "What you say can be carried out and will show results."

帝舜謂禹曰：「女亦昌言。」 Emperor Shun said to Yu, "You speak plainly in your turn."

禹拜曰； Yu bowed to speak.

「於，予何言！ Yu said, "Ah—what more is there for me to say!

皋陶難禹曰：「何謂孳孳？」 Gao Yao pressed him: "What do you mean by striving without ceasing?"

禹曰：「鴻水滔天，浩浩懷山襄陵，下民皆服於水。 Yu answered, "When the flood rose to the sky, wrapped the hills, and overtopped the valleys, the people were trapped in the waters.

禹曰：「於，帝！ Yu said, "Ah, my lord!

禹曰：「然。 Yu said, "It is so.

禹曰：「予（辛壬）娶涂山，［辛壬］癸甲，生啟予不子，以故能成水土功。 Yu said, "I wed a woman of Tushan after four days away; when our son Qi was born I did not dote on him—thus I finished the flood work.

皋陶於是敬禹之德，令民皆則禹。 Gao Yao then honored Yu's example and told the people to imitate him.

於是天下皆宗禹之明度數聲樂，為山川神主。 Then all under Heaven took Yu's calendrics, measures, and music as their model and made him lord of mountains and rivers.

帝舜薦禹於天，為嗣。 Emperor Shun presented Yu to Heaven as successor.

三年喪畢，禹辭辟舜之子商均於陽城。 When the three years' mourning ended, Yu withdrew to Yangcheng to yield to Shun's son Shangjun.

天下諸侯皆去商均而朝禹。 The lords of the realm forsook Shangjun and turned to Yu.

禹於是遂即天子位，南面朝天下，國號曰夏后，姓姒氏。 Yu then took the throne, faced south over the realm, styled his dynasty Xia, and took the clan name Si.

帝禹立而舉皋陶薦之，且授政焉，而皋陶卒。 When Emperor Yu came to power he promoted Gao Yao and meant to hand him the government, but Gao Yao died.

十年，帝禹東巡狩，至于會稽而崩。 In the tenth year of his reign Yu toured east to Kuaiji and died there.

三年之喪畢，益讓帝禹之子啟，而辟居箕山之陽。 After the mourning Yi yielded to Yu's son Qi and withdrew south of Mount Ji.

禹子啟賢，天下屬意焉。 Yu's son Qi was worthy, and the realm's hopes settled on him.

及禹崩，雖授益，益之佐禹日淺，天下未洽。 Though Yu had named Yi, Yi had served at Yu's side too briefly to win the people's trust.

故諸侯皆去益而朝啟，曰：「吾君帝禹之子也」。 So the lords left Yi and went to court with Qi, saying, "Our lord is the son of Emperor Yu."

夏后帝啟，禹之子，其母涂山氏之女也。 Emperor Qi of Xia was Yu's son; his mother was a lady of Tushan.

太史公曰：禹為姒姓，其後分封，用國為姓，故有夏后氏、有扈氏、有男氏、斟尋氏、彤城氏、褒氏、費氏、杞氏、繒氏、辛氏、冥氏、斟（氏）戈氏。 The Grand Historian says: Yu bore the surname Si; later branches took their states as clan names, producing houses such as Xiahou, Youhu, Younan, Zhenxun, Tongcheng, Bao, Fei, Qi, Zeng, Xin, Ming, Zhen, and Ge.

或言禹會諸侯江南，計功而崩，因葬焉，命曰會稽。 Some hold that Yu met the lords south of the Yangtze, settled the tally of merits, and died there—hence the name Kuaiji, "gathering of tallies."

而道河北行二渠，復禹舊跡，而梁、楚之地復寧，無水災。 Thereafter, they diverted the Yellow River into two channels to the north, restored Yu’s old traces, and the lands of Liang and Chu again became peaceful and free of flood disaster.

太史公曰：余南登廬山，觀禹疏九江，遂至于會稽太湟，上姑蘇，望五湖； The Grand Historian says: I myself climbed the south face of Mount Lu, observed Yu’s diversion of the Nine Rivers, then went on to Kuaiji and Taihuang, ascended Gusu, and looked out over the Five Lakes;
