壬申，以吳國王蕭孝穆為南院樞密使，北府宰相蕭孝忠北院樞密使，封楚王，韓國王蕭惠北府宰相、同知元帥府事，韓八南院大王，耶律侯哂東京留守，北院樞密副使耶律仁先同知東京留守事，北面林牙蕭革北院樞密副使。 On renshen day Prince of Wu Xiao Xiaomu was appointed Southern Privy Commissioner; Northern Chancellor Xiao Xiaozhong was made Northern Privy Commissioner and enfeoffed as Prince of Chu; Prince of Han Xiao Hui was made Northern Chancellor and co-administrator of the marshal headquarters; Han Ba was made Southern Court great king; Yelü Houshen was appointed Eastern Capital regent; Northern Privy Vice Commissioner Yelü Renxian was made co-administrator of Eastern Capital regent affairs; and Northern Court linya Xiao Ge was appointed Northern Privy Vice Commissioner.

When they reached the site of Xiao Hui's defeat, they captured enemy scouts and learned where Liao subjects had been trapped in settled districts and could not escape; they took all of them prisoner and brought them home.

蕭惠 Xiao Hui

蕭惠，字伯仁，小字脫古思，淳欽皇后弟阿古只五世孫。 Xiao Hui, whose courtesy name was Boren and childhood name Tuogusi, was a fifth-generation descendant of Aguzhi, younger brother of Empress Chunqin.

從伯父排押征高麗，至奴古達北嶺，高麗阻險以拒，惠力戰，破之。 When he joined his uncle Paiya on the Goguryeo campaign and reached North Ridge at Nuguda, the Koreans barred the mountain passes against them; Hui fought hard and defeated them.

朝議以遼東重地，非勛戚不能鎮撫，乃命惠知東京留守事。 Court opinion held that Liaodong was too important to entrust to anyone but meritorious imperial kin, so Hui was assigned to oversee the Eastern Capital prefect's office.

太平六年，討回鶻阿薩蘭部，征兵諸路，獨阻卜酋長直剌後期，立斬以徇。 In Taiping year 6, while suppressing the Aslan Uyghurs, levies were called from every route; only the Zhibu chieftain Zhila arrived late, and Hui had him beheaded on the spot as an example.

時直剌之子聚兵來襲，阻卜酋長烏八密以告，惠未之信。 Meanwhile Zhila's son was raising forces for a raid; the Zhibu chieftain Wuba sent word in secret, but Hui refused to credit the report.

惠倉卒列陣，敵出不意攻我營。 Hui hurriedly drew up his lines, but the enemy took his camp by surprise.

眾請乘時奮擊，惠以我軍疲敝，未可用，弗聽。 His men urged an immediate counterattack, but Hui judged the army too worn down to fight and refused.

烏八請以夜斫營，惠又不許。 Wuba proposed a night raid on the enemy camp, and again Hui would not allow it.

阻卜歸，惠乃設伏兵擊之。 When the Zhibu turned back, Hui laid an ambush and attacked.

惠為招討累年，屢遭侵掠，士馬疲困。 Hui held the pacification commission for years; repeated incursions had left his men and horses worn out.

興宗即位，知興中府，歷順義軍節度使、東京留守、西南面招討使，加開府儀同三司、檢校太師，兼侍中，封鄭王，賜推誠協謀竭節功臣。 When Emperor Xingzong took the throne, Hui governed Xingzhong Prefecture and held successive posts as military commissioner of the Shunyi Army, Eastern Capital prefect, and southwestern route pacification commissioner; he was further made acting three excellencies of the opening office, honorary grand preceptor, and vice director of the secretariat, created Prince of Zheng, and granted the title Meritorious Subject of Sincere Counsel and Utmost Loyalty.

惠曰：「兩國強弱，聖慮所悉。 Hui said, "The relative strength of the two states is something Your Majesty well understands.

帝從惠言，乃遣使索宋十城，會諸軍於燕。 The emperor accepted Hui's counsel, sent envoys to demand ten Song cities, and assembled the armies at Yan.

惠與太弟帥師壓宋境，宋人重失十城，增歲幣請和。 Hui and the imperial younger brother led armies to press the Song frontier; dreading the loss of ten cities, the Song increased annual tribute and sued for peace.

惠以首事功，進王韓。 For initiating the affair Hui was created Prince of Han.

惠曰：「元昊忘奕世恩，萌奸計，車駕親臨，不盡歸所掠。 Hui said, "Yuanhao has forgotten generations of imperial favor and plotted treason; even with the emperor himself on campaign, he still will not return all he has taken.

夏人列拒馬於河西，蔽盾以立，惠擊敗之。 The Xia drew up barricades west of the river and stood behind shields; Hui broke their line.

元昊走，惠麾先鋒及右翼邀之。 Yuanhao fled, and Hui sent the vanguard and right wing to cut him off.

惠自河南進，戰艦糧船綿亙數百里。 Hui advanced from Henan with a river fleet of warships and supply boats stretching for hundreds of li.

諸將咸請備不虞，惠曰：「諒祚必自迎車駕，何暇及我？ The generals all urged precautions against surprise; Hui replied, "Liangzuo will surely come out to greet the emperor himself—what time will he have for us?

候者報夏師至，惠方詰妄言罪，諒祚軍從阪而下。 When scouts reported the Xia army's approach, Hui was still rebuking them for false alarm—just as Liangzuo's forces poured down the slope.

惠與麾下不及甲而走。 Hui and his staff fled before they could arm themselves.

追者射惠，幾不免，軍士死傷尤眾。 Pursuers shot at Hui and nearly killed him; the toll among the troops was especially heavy.

惠性寬厚，自奉儉薄。 Hui was generous of temperament and lived modestly.

論曰：初，遼之謀復三關也，蕭惠贊伐宋之舉，而宋人增幣請和。 The commentators observe: When Liao first plotted to retake the Three Passes, Xiao Hui urged war on Song, and the Song court bought peace with increased tribute.

同時諸將撫綏邊圉，若迂魯忠勤不伐，鐸魯斡高情雅韻，鐸軫雖廉不逮蕭惠，而無邀功啟釁之罪，亦庶乎君子之風矣。 Among frontier commanders of the same era, Yulu served with loyal diligence and no self-aggrandizement; Duoluwo bore himself with refined integrity; and though Duozhen's modesty fell short of Xiao Hui's, none of them sought credit or provoked conflict—they came near, at least, to the mark of a gentleman.
