裕祿，字壽山，喜塔臘氏，滿洲正白旗人，湖北巡撫崇綸子。 Yu Lu, whose style was Shoushan, of the Xitala clan, came from the Plain White Banner; his father was Hubei Governor Chonglun.

前江南提督李世忠本降寇，罷職家居，所為橫恣，裕祿疏請誅之。 Former Jiangnan commander Li Shizhong, a former surrendered rebel living in retirement, behaved with violent arrogance; Yu Lu memorialized for his execution.

會以事詣安慶，召飲署中，酒行，出密旨，麾眾縛斬之，而仍卹其家，人以是高其能。 When Yu Lu visited Anqing on business, Li was summoned to the yamen; wine was served, a secret edict produced, and Li was bound and beheaded—yet his family still received relief, and people admired Yu Lu's resolve.

廷議修鐵路，起盧溝訖漢口，下群臣議，裕祿力陳不可，忤旨。 When the court debated a railway from Lugou Bridge to Hankou, Yu Lu strongly opposed it and offended the throne.

十七年，熱河奸民騷動，毀教堂，殺蒙人，裕祿會師朝陽，擊平之，予優敘。 In 1891 Rehe ruffians destroyed churches and killed Mongols; Yu Lu assembled troops at Chaoyang, suppressed them, and earned commendation.

會徵榮祿入樞廷，遂代之督直隸。 When Ronglu entered the Grand Council, Yu Lu replaced him as viceroy of Zhili.

裕祿初頗持正論，主剿，捕其酋姚洛奇置之法。 At first Yu Lu favored suppression, captured chieftain Yao Luoqi, and executed him.

居無何，毓賢撫山東，縱匪，匪散入河間、深、冀，而裕祿承風指，忽主撫。 Soon Yu Xian governed Shandong and indulged the Boxers; they spread into Hejian, Shenzhou, and Jizhou, and Yu Lu suddenly turned to appeasement.

袁世凱方將武衛軍，語裕祿：「盍不請嚴旨捕治？」 Yuan Shikai, commanding the Wuwei Army, asked Yu Lu: "Why not request a stern edict to capture and punish them?"

裕祿曰：「拳民無他伎，緩則自消，激則生變。 Yu Lu replied: "The Boxers have no other arts; if handled gently they will fade, but provocation will breed disorder.

吳橋知縣勞乃宣禁傳習，為書上裕祿，格不行。 Wuqiao Magistrate Lao Naixuan forbade Boxer practice and wrote to Yu Lu, but the letter was blocked.

張德成居獨流，稱「舉國第一壇」，曹福田為津匪魁，二人者炫神術，為妄妖言相煽誘，裕祿不之問。 Zhang Decheng at Duliang styled himself head of "the foremost altar in the realm," and Cao Futian led the Tianjin Boxers; they traded boasts of magic and sedition, and Yu Lu looked the other way.

已，复致書請餉二十萬，自任滅外人，裕祿馳檄召之，於是二人出入節署，與裕祿抗禮。 They soon demanded two hundred thousand taels, promising to destroy the foreigners; Yu Lu summoned them by urgent dispatch, and thereafter they came and went at his yamen as his equals.

頃之，各國兵艦大集，匪猶群聚督轅求槍砲，裕祿命詣軍械所任自擇，盡攫以去。 Soon foreign warships massed offshore, yet the Boxers still crowded the governor's yamen demanding arms; Yu Lu sent them to the arsenal to take what they wanted, and they carried everything away.

而聯軍絡繹登岸，索大沽砲台，裕祿懼，疏告急，請敕董福祥來援。 Allied troops landed in force and demanded the Taku forts; terrified, Yu Lu sent urgent memorials begging the throne to summon Dong Fuxiang.

聯軍索益堅，提督羅榮光不允，戰失利，而裕祿且上天津團民殺敵狀，於是朝廷以團民為可恃，宣戰詔書遂下，而不知大沽已先數日失矣。 The allies pressed harder; Commissioner Luo Rongguang refused and was defeated; yet Yu Lu also reported Tianjin militia victories, and the court, believing the militia dependable, declared war—unaware the Taku forts had fallen days earlier.

裕祿又報大捷，盛張拳匪功，發帑金十萬犒團，更薦德成、福田於朝，飾戰狀，獲賞頭品秩、花翎、黃馬褂。 He reported another great victory, lavished praise on the Boxers, distributed one hundred thousand taels to reward the militia, and recommended Decheng and Futian to the court with embellished battle accounts; they were given top rank, peacock feathers, and yellow riding jackets.

事急，官軍戰車站，敗績，裕祿退保北倉。 As the crisis deepened the regular army fought at the railway station, was routed, and fell back to Beicang.

裕祿飛章自劾，詔革職留任。 Yu Lu urgently memorialized to impeach himself; the throne stripped his rank but left him in post.

踰月，北倉失，裕祿又退楊村，遂自殺。 A month later Beicang fell; he retreated to Yangcun and took his own life.

裕祿死，護總督。 When Yu Lu died he served as acting governor-general.

榮光備益嚴，乃佯就款，使人言於裕祿，謂第得四五艘入口護僑商，無他意，裕祿許之。 Rongguang tightened his defenses; the enemy then feigned negotiation and told Yulu through an envoy that only four or five ships wished to enter to protect their nationals, with no other intent—and Yulu consented.

榮光再謁裕祿乞發戰令，諜者已報台毀，榮光憤極，歸，拔刀殺眷屬，曰：「毋令辱外人手！」 Rongguang again begged Yulu for the order to fight; spies had already reported the forts lost; in fury he returned, drew his sword, and killed his family, crying: "They must not be shamed by foreigners!"
