捻首四人，曰張總愚、任柱、牛洪、賴文光。 There were four Nian chiefs: Zhang Zongwan, Ren Zhu, Niu Hong, and Lai Wenguang.

時牛洪死，張總愚竄陝西，任柱、賴文光竄湖北，自是有東西捻之號。 Niu Hong was dead; Zhang Zongwan fled into Shaanxi while Ren Zhu and Lai Wenguang fled into Hubei—from then on they were called the Eastern and Western Nian.

官軍陣斬任柱，賴文光走死揚州。 Government forces killed Ren Zhu in battle, and Lai Wenguang fled and died at Yangzhou.

時曾國籓督軍剿捻久無功，命回兩江，而以鴻章署欽差代之，敗東捻任柱、賴文光於湖北。 At that time Zeng Guofan had long led the campaign against the Nian without success; he was ordered back to the Two Jiangs, and Hongzhang served as acting Imperial Commissioner in his place, defeating the Eastern Nian leaders Ren Zhu and Lai Wenguang in Hubei.

賴文光挈眾竄山東，戰屢敗，遁入海濱，官軍圍擊之，斬獲三萬。 Lai Wenguang led his followers into Shandong, suffered repeated defeats, and fled to the seashore; government troops surrounded and attacked them, killing and capturing thirty thousand.

賴文光走死揚州。 Lai Wenguang fled and was killed at Yangzhou.

賴文光麾藍旗賊犯松林軍。 Lai Wenguang led the Blue Banner force against Songlin.

賴文光鳧水南奔，松林疾馳六百里，追至清江。 Lai Wenguang fled south across the rivers. Songlin raced six hundred li in pursuit as far as Qingjiang.

文光死奔，至揚州瓦窯鋪，為吳毓蘭所擒。 Wenguang fled headlong to Wayao post station near Yangzhou, where Wu Yulan seized him.

破任柱於贛榆，要賴文光於濰縣，長樂等並力奮擊，賊鳧水東走，躡至餘家寨，賊受創甚鉅，复要之壽光南北洋河、巨瀰河間，擒斬三萬，文光竄揚州被擒，賜黃馬褂。 They broke Ren Zhu at Ganyu and caught Lai Wenguang at Weixian. Changle and the others hammered the rebels until they fled east across the rivers; the pursuit reached Yujia stockade and inflicted crippling losses. At Shouguang, between the Yang and Mi rivers, thirty thousand were killed or captured. Wenguang fled to Yangzhou and was taken. Changle received the yellow riding jacket.

六年，殄任柱於贛榆，破賴文光於壽光，所部殺賊最多。 That year he destroyed Ren Zhu at Ganyu and routed Lai Wenguang at Shouguang; his troops accounted for more rebel dead than any other unit.
