募水陸萬人，水軍以褚汝航、楊載福、彭玉麟領之，陸軍以塔齊布、羅澤南領之。 He raised ten thousand men for combined land and river operations: Chu Ruhang, Yang Zaifu, and Peng Yulin commanded the fleet, while Taqibu and Luo Zinan led the land forces.

澤南沿江東岸攻花園寇屯，塔齊布伏兵洪山，載福舟師深入寇屯，士皆露立，不避鉛丸。 Luo Zinan struck the rebel camp at Huayuan along the east bank; Taqibu lay in ambush on Hongshan; Yang Zaifu's fleet drove deep into the enemy lines, and his men stood exposed in the open, heedless of musket fire.

澤南從征江西，复弋陽，拔廣信，破義寧，而塔齊布卒於軍。 Luo Zinan campaigned in Jiangxi, retaking Yiyang, capturing Guangxin, and breaking Yining, while Taqibu died in camp.

國籓在江西與巡撫陳啟邁不相能，澤南奔命往來，上書國籓，言東南大勢在武昌，請率所部援鄂，國籓從之。 In Jiangxi Guofan clashed with Governor Chen Qimai; Luo Zinan shuttled back and forth on urgent orders and wrote to Guofan that the key to the southeast was Wuchang, asking to lead his division to relieve Hubei, and Guofan agreed.

幕客劉蓉諫曰：「公所恃者塔、羅。 His adviser Liu Rong objected: "You rely on Taqibu and Luo Zinan.

嵩燾祖餞澤南曰：「曾公兵單，奈何？」 At the farewell feast Guo Songtao said to Luo Zinan, "Lord Zeng's force is thin—what then?"

澤南曰：「天苟不亡本朝，公必不死。」 Luo Zinan answered, "If Heaven does not mean to destroy our dynasty, Lord Zeng will not die."

議者爭請調澤南軍，上以武漢功垂成，不可棄。 Critics clamored to recall Luo Zinan's army, but the emperor ruled that the Wuhan campaign was near success and must not be abandoned.

澤南督戰益急，卒死於軍。 Luo Zinan pressed the fighting ever harder and in the end died in the field.

續賓者，與弟續宜皆澤南高第弟子也。 Li Xubing and his younger brother Li Xuyi were both among Luo Zinan's finest pupils.

咸豐三年，入湘軍，從羅澤南轉戰江西、湖北，洊擢守備。 In the third year of Xianfeng he joined the Hunan Army, campaigned with Luo Zinan through Jiangxi and Hubei, and rose by repeated steps to garrison commander.

羅澤南薦諸巡撫胡林翼，檄領副後營，擢千總。 Luo Zinan recommended him to Governor Hu Linyi, who ordered him to lead the deputy rear battalion and promoted him to platoon leader.

咸豐五年，以外委隨羅澤南戰江西，克義寧。 In the fifth year of Xianfeng he served as an externe corporal under Luo Zinan in Jiangxi and helped take Yining.

羅澤南舊部，轉戰兩湖，積功至副將，賜號勗勇巴圖魯。 A veteran of Luo Zinan's command, he fought across Hunan and Hubei, rose to brigade commander on accumulated merit, and received the title Xuyong Batulu.

七年，李續賓代澤南，使總理營務。 In the seventh year Li Xubin succeeded Luo Zenan and placed Guochen in charge of overall camp affairs.

既而武昌復陷，坤修從羅澤南援湖北，復咸寧、蒲圻、崇陽、通城，累擢同知，賜花翎。 When Wuchang fell again he followed Luo Zenan to relieve Hubei, retook Xianning, Puqi, Chongyang, and Tongcheng, was repeatedly promoted to subprefect, and received the peacock feather.

論曰：金國琛為羅、李舊部。 The historians comment: Jin Guochen belonged to the old following of Luo Zenan and Li Xubin.
