二月，封侍中衛尉淳于長為定陵侯。 In the second month, enfeoffed Attendant and Commander of the Guards Chunyu Chang as Marquis of Dingling.

定陵侯淳于長大逆不道，下獄死。 Dingling Marquis Chunyu Chang was greatly rebellious and not righteous, sent to prison and died.

會定陵侯長有罪，當就國，長舅紅陽侯立與業書曰：「誠哀老姊垂白，隨無狀子出關，願勿復用前事相侵。」 When Chunyu Chang was ordered to his fief for crimes, his uncle Wang Li, the marquis of Hongyang, wrote to Du Ye: "My poor white-haired sister must follow her worthless son through the pass—please do not use old scores against him."

定陵侯既出關，伏罪復發，下洛陽獄。 After Chunyu Chang had crossed the pass, new evidence of guilt surfaced and he was remanded to the Luoyang jail.

其春，丞相方進薨，業上書言：「方進本與長深結厚，更相稱薦，長陷大惡，獨得不坐，苟慾障塞前過，不為陛下廣持平例，又無恐懼之心，反因時信其邪辟，報睚眥怨。 That spring Chancellor Zhai Fangjin died. Du Ye submitted a memorial saying, "Fangjin had been deeply bound in friendship with Chang and repeatedly recommended each other. Chang fell into great wickedness yet alone escaped punishment. Fangjin wished to cover his former faults, did not extend evenhanded standards for Your Majesty, and lacked fear; instead he seized the moment to trust Chang's perverse ways and repay a grudge for a trifle.

故事，大逆朋友坐免官，無歸故郡者，今坐長者歸故郡，已深一等； Under precedent, friends implicated in great treason were punished by removal from office; they were not sent back to their native commanderies. Now those punished because of Chang have been returned to their home commanderies, which is already one degree harsher;

淳于長字子鴻，魏郡元城人也。 Chunyu Chang, styled Zihong, came from Yuancheng in Wei commandery.

會大將軍王鳳病，長侍病，晨夜扶丞左右，甚為甥舅之恩。 When Wang Feng fell ill, Chang kept vigil day and night at his bedside—the bond of uncle and nephew ran deep.

Palace Attendant and Defender of the Capital Chunyu Chang repeatedly stated that the work should stop and that relocated households should be returned to their former homes. I referred Chang's words to the dukes and ministers, and all who deliberated agreed with his plan.

其賜長爵關內侯。」 He awarded Chang a marquis-within-the-passes title."

後遂封為定陵侯，大見信用，貴傾公卿。 Chang was soon made marquis of Dingling, deeply trusted, and his prestige overshadowed the high ministers.

長與靡私通，因取為小妻。 Chunyu Chang took Mi as a secret concubine.

許后因靡賂遺長，欲求復為婕妤。 The deposed empress sent gifts through Mi, begging to be restored as a lady of handsome favor.

長受許后金錢乘輿服御物前後千餘萬，詐許為白上，立以為左皇后。 Chang pocketed more than ten million in coin, carriages, and wardrobe from her, promised to plead her case, and swore he would make her a "left empress."

長以外親居九卿位，次第當代根。 As an in-law already in the nine ministers, Chang stood next in line to succeed him.

莽侍曲陽侯疾，因言：「長見將軍久病，意喜，自以當代輔政，至對衣冠議語署置。」 At Wang Gen's sickbed Mang said, "Chang sees the general has been ill a long time. He's pleased at heart, thinks he'll replace you as regent, and is even discussing appointments with men in caps and robes in the yamen."

莽求見太后，具言長驕佚，欲代曲陽侯，對莽母上車，私與長定貴人姊通，受取其衣物。 Mang told the empress dowager everything: Chang's arrogance, his designs on Wang Gen's post, his brazen familiarity with Mang's mother at the carriage step, his affair with the Changding noblewoman's sister, and the gifts he took from her.

莽白上，上乃免長官，遣就國。 Mang carried the word to Chengdi, who stripped Chang of his posts and ordered him to his fief.

初，長為侍中，奉兩宮使，親密。 In his days as palace attendant he had run errands for both palaces and been treated as family.
