太后聞帝即位，遣太弟李胡率兵拒之。 Learning that the Emperor had succeeded, the Empress Dowager sent Li Hu, the Imperial Younger Brother, with an army to oppose him.

上遣郎君勤德等詣兩軍諭解。 The Emperor sent langjun Qinde and others to both camps to urge a settlement.

丁卯，行柴冊禮，群臣上尊號曰天授皇帝。 On dingmao day the firewood-and-script rites were performed, and the assembled ministers offered the honorific title Emperor Who Received Heaven's Mandate.

世宗孝和莊憲皇帝，諱阮，小字兀欲。 Emperor Shizong, posthumously Xiaohé Zhuangxian, bore the personal name Ruan and the childhood name Wuyu.

帝儀觀豐偉，內寬外嚴，善騎射，樂施予，人望歸之。 He was imposing in bearing, lenient at heart yet stern in demeanor, skilled at horsemanship and archery, generous by nature, and the people looked to him with hope.

大同元年春二月，封永康王。 In the second month of spring in the first year of Datong he was enfeoffed as Prince Yongkang.

群臣皆醉，察割反，帝遇弒，年三十四。 All the ministers were drunk; Chage rebelled, and the emperor was assassinated at the age of thirty-four.

二年，謚孝和皇帝，廟號世宗。 In the second year he was posthumously titled Emperor Xiaohé, with the temple name Shizong.

統和二十六年七月，加謚孝和莊憲皇帝。 In the seventh month of the twenty-sixth year of Tonghe his posthumous title was augmented to Emperor Xiaohé Zhuangxian.

贊曰：世宗中才之主也，入繼大統，曾未三年，納唐丸書，即議南伐，即乏持重，宜乖周防，蓋有致禍之道矣。 The eulogy says: Shizong was a ruler of middling talent. Having succeeded to the great mandate, within barely three years he accepted Tang's wax-sealed letter and at once debated a southern campaign — lacking steadiness and contrary to circumspection; he surely had within him the ways that bring ruin.
